Benchmark Update – Wales (KS5 & KS4, A level, AS level and BTEC)
New Minimum Expected Grades (MEGs) for 2019-20
The updated 2019-20 benchmarks for all courses will be in Connect Interactive from Results Day. The purpose of this short briefing paper is to provide some headline information about the new benchmarks, and how they might impact on your analysis.
Headline news and changes
A & AS levels – The headline news for both A level and AS level in Wales, is that there is little change in the Expected Points for each prior attainment band and therefore no change in Minimum Expected Grades (MEGs).
BTEC – The benchmarking exercise showed little movement in the minimum expected points for the 2010 BTEC suite, and therefore we have made the decision to retain the existing benchmark.
This means that there will be no change in your MEGs. The 2016 BTEC suite was benchmarked on data submitted to us by our schools and colleges. These were therefore interim benchmarks and we now have national data on which to base the benchmarks for 2019-20.
Key Stage 4 – We have not re-benchmarked the KS4 benchmarks and therefore MEGs will remain the same as in 2018-19.
All of this means that if you have been monitoring your Year Groups across the Academic Year, the progress indicators have not changed significantly, and therefore you would expect to see a similar distribution of Alps grades across strategic and subject indicators.
Publication of full Benchmarks
We will publish full benchmark tables and subject thermometers in our updated Alps Guide for 2019-20 which you will find in the Resources section on your Connect Homepage from August.
