Spotlight Series: Using Alps to drive student performance improvement in Bridgend Local Authority

How nine secondary schools built a shared approach to student outcomes, and why it worked

Since 2019, Bridgend Local Authority has worked with Alps through its partnership with the Central South Consortium (CSC). The aim was straightforward: to give schools, senior leaders and the local authority a consistent way of understanding student progress and identifying where support was needed.

Today, all nine secondary schools in Bridgend use Alps at both KS4 and KS5. Individual schools use Alps Connect to analyse outcomes and monitor progress, while the local authority uses Alps Summit to view performance across all schools and identify wider trends.

Since working collaboratively with Alps, the improvement in results have been incredibly impressive. The majority of schools have improved their Alps grade since 2022/23 and for some, the shift has been transformational:

• +6 Alps grades gained by one school (matching the top 10% nationally)
• Over 50% of schools match the top 40% nationally
• 2 schools reaching top 25% or better
• +2 Alps grades gained at authority level
• 9/9 secondary schools using Alps
