Adding value Post-16 in 2022 and 2023

11th March 2022

In February 2022, the DfE confirmed in their publication of the ‘16 to 18 accountability measures – update’, that there will be no A Level or Applied General Progress Measures (based on the L3VA) published in the 2022 or 2023 Performance Tables.

This is because the DfE ‘will not be able to produce this measure, as we have committed not to use KS4 prior attainment from qualifications achieved between January 2020 and August 2021.’

The A-Level and Applied General Performance Tables in 2022 and 2023 will, therefore, be dominated by your Average Grades.

Why is value-added a fairer way to assess the quality of the curriculum than raw attainment?

Alps is built around value-added analysis. We believe that this is key data to use when evaluating internal performance and assessing your students’ progress.

Although average attainment is also a valuable way to evaluate school and college performance, we know that schools and colleges that have cohorts with higher average prior attainment are likely to perform better based on average attainment than those who have more inclusive entry requirements.

Alps value-added measures are based on the prior attainment of all the students in your school or college and measure the progress made by them on all of their courses. Our value-added analysis demonstrates fairly how much value was added to your students through their Post-16 curriculum in your school or college.

What’s your solution (if not already using Alps)?

Alps offers value-added performance analysis at KS4 and KS5 and will be able to fill any gap you have due to the lack of government measures in 2022 and 2023.

Connect is the Alps online software that enables you to securely set aspirational minimum expected grades for all students and both to track progress at subject, teaching set, student group and individual student level during their courses and then to evaluate results against the most recent validated national data set from the DfE on Results Day.

To see Connect in action and gain some good ideas about maximising post-16 provision in the final 10 weeks before the 2022 exams you can also register to watch our free on-demand webinar here.
